The Southern Reef Islands are the most easily accessible of the Great Barrier Reef chain. A short sail from Gladstone and we've got one crazy pretty atoll after another to explore. From the Heron Island National Park to stunning Fitzroy and a whole bunch of other options, when the wind blows you'll feel like you've had some psychedelics, and when it doesn't grab a mask and a speargun (if you are so inclined!) and round us up some dinner! We'll sail out of Gladstone, swim across the Tropic of Capricorn and head into bliss. I don't suppose we'll get tired too easily of bliss, but at some point we need to get back to the mainland and my nose points me to Great Keppel Island and the vicinity. Check it out on Google Images, you'll see what I mean.

"Great Keppel Island is a ruggedly perfect island with rocky headlands, forested hills and a wide, dreamy fringe of powdery white sand lapped by clear azure waters. Numerous ‘castaway’ beaches ring the 14-sq-km island, while natural bushland covers 90% of the interior." -- Lonely Planet

Those of you who are into surfing will possibly find some great breaks on the mainland so arrive early or stay late to check these out. There's also a couple of established kitesurfing schools and spots along this coast- probably worth a visit.

This trip is available to NON MEMBERS of the Quest! Enquire now.

Getting there: International flight to Brisbane and then there are number of easy ways to Gladstone- bus, car rental, or domestic flight. From Great Keppel there is a regular ferry back to the mainland.
