Kadavu, Fiji and Astrolabe Reef Adventures

Kadavu is one of the few places in all our travels across the Pacific since 2001 we have not visited, and it's always been very high on the list. The Great Astrolabe Reef, the circular reef that surrounds the Kadavu archipelago is one of the largest in the world. The last time we were in Fiji (2004) we kept hearing the most tempting reports of this island group. Hardly developed, tranquil, very few roads, beautiful, and incredible underwater scenery. And I also heard a lot about the wind. We'll be arriving just as the trade winds really start to kick in and there's a bit of a Venturi effect both to the south and north of Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji as it's so high. Looking at this reef and island system on Google Earth is tantalizing. With a boat like Discovery, adventure will be very easy to come by! Small kites and sore legs anyone?

Getting there: There are a number of ways to get to Fiji. Fiji Airways, Air New Zealand, or United Airlines. International flights arrive into Nadi, on the west coast. From there you will need to go by road (one hour+ taxi or shuttle) to Suva or by domestic air on Fiji Airways.
