Islands and Islands and More Islands
||Hollins Bay and Mackay
||Jun 28 - Jul 7, 2017
One of the things I love about creating our yearly itinerary is discovering some part of the world I never knew existed. We've all heard about the Great Barrier reef and the Whitsunday islands, but have you every heard of the Percy Group? How about the Duke and Marble Islands? And there are dozens and dozens and dozens of them! Really I don't know where we should start and end. There's supposedly an airport in Hollins Bay where I'm hoping we can get some provisions but if not we'll just drag a line, there should be no shortage of yummy fish life in this tropical wonderland. I should write a lot more, but I can't find much. That's ALWAYS a good thing. The pictures I've found make this look like a veritable azure jungle of visual treats. Get on board, point it north and have one! And if the islands aren't awesome enough, we'll just head out to the Great Barrier, where it should be no trouble to blow some minds.
"Stretching over 2000km along the eastern coast of Australia, the Great Barrier is a mind-blowing natural wonder. This marine wonderland and Unesco World Heritage Site harbours one of richest ecosystems on the planet. Over 2900 individual reefs compose this complicated living system, along with some 900 islands scattered from the Tropic of Capricorn to the fringes of Papua New Guinea." -- Lonely Planet.
Getting there: International flights to Brisbane or Townsville, then take a domestic flight to Hollins Bay (or the more adventurous could drive) and from there we've got to figure it out. This part of the coast is not developed and pretty remote. We'll end in Mackay, a larger town that will have easy access back to the main cities.
