"Stretching over 2000km along the eastern coast of Australia, the Great Barrier is a mind-blowing natural wonder. This marine wonderland and Unesco World Heritage Site harbours one of richest ecosystems on the planet. Over 2900 individual reefs compose this complicated living system, along with some 900 islands scattered from the Tropic of Capricorn to the fringes of Papua New Guinea." -- Lonely Planet.
"Great Keppel Island is a ruggedly perfect island with rocky headlands, forested hills and a wide, dreamy fringe of powdery white sand lapped by clear azure waters. Numerous ‘castaway’ beaches ring the 14-sq-km island, while natural bushland covers 90% of the interior." -- Lonely Planet
Those of you who are into surfing will possibly find some great breaks on the mainland so arrive early or stay late to check these out. There's also a couple of established kitesurfing schools and spots along this coast- probably worth a visit.
Getting there: International flight to Brisbane or Townsville and then make your way via car rental, bus or flight to Rockhampton. From there there's a regular ferry to Great Keppel Island. Now, getting back from the Great Barrier is something we're still researching. As it's 100+ miles offshore we'd like to get you back by plane or helicopter to the mainland rather than sail, but we're looking into this.
