Great Barrier Island and the Coromandel Penninsula

Trip Ports of Call Dates Days
178 Auckland Jan 17 - Jan 27, 2017 10
One of the best sailing trips of my life happened out of Auckland back in 2003 out to the Great Barrier Island. Just a short sail from the "City of Sails" and you enter another world. All you need is a sack of lemons and some butter and fishing line and a screw driver and you can have all the mussels, oysters, clams and fish you can eat. Look for the elusive Kiwi on stunning walks along windswept gorgeous beaches and through North Island jungle, have a glass of chilled Marlborough Sound Sauvignon and life is GOOD. We'll sail out to the Great Barrier for a few days, then drop down to the Coromandel Penninsula to sit in the geothermal beaches and walk through old-growth Kauri forests- places even the locals rarely get.

"New Zealand’s South Island usually steals the attention, but the oft-overlooked North Island also features a sublime combination of forests, mountains and beaches. In the latter, the North has a clear lead – particularly in subtropical Northland, the Coromandel Peninsula and the west coast, with its wild surf beaches. Tackle one of the North Island’s Great Walks – one even offers a river journey by canoe or kayak – or spend a few hours wandering through the accessible wilderness of the Coromandel. Day trips from vibrant Auckland can include kayaking to dormant volcanoes or canyoning and abseiling down forested waterfalls." -- Lonely Planet. Read more:

Getting there: International flights to Auckland are offered on several different airlines. We suggest spending a night or two in the city or environs on the front end to deal with the long flight and jet lag. Auckland is not a great city compared to the capital (Wellington) for poking around as it's a working city and isn't very vibrant, but there are lovely walks, some fun places to eat, and the Viaduct is must if you are an Americas Cup fan.
