Fakarava to Arutua via Apataki and Toau, Tuamotus

Trip Ports of Call Dates Days
131 Fakarava Lagoon and Apataki Lagoon May 25 - Jun 4, 2014 10
"Fakarava and Apataki will hold a special place in my heart for the rest of my life. They are the quintessential wave and lagoon kitesurfing locations and when we happened across these for the first time in 2001, before I even knew what kitesurfing was, they still left an indelible impression. When we returned in 2008 it was game on. If you were looking for a place that defines radness for our sport, look no further than these remote atolls in the Tuamotus. Ok, so you might get nipped by a shark, but that's all part of the adventure right?" -- Gavin McClurg

I think I'll leave the description of this trip to this video, shot and directed by John Bilderback back in 2008. This will be our 4th trip to this part of the world. It will still not be enough.

Fakarava is one of the largest circular reefs in the world and gets a few dozen tourists who come for the world-class diving a year- if that. Toau and Apataki are even less-visited much smaller jewels whose only real industry is black pearl farming. Big air, big surf, big winds, big coconuts, big sharks, big fun. Imagine a 30 mile long lagoon of silky water, clear and aquamarine in color, 25 knot winds and you've just about got it. Well of course there's the world class reef diving, and oh yeah- some pretty stellar waves along the way as well and...well, you get my drift.

To read the log from this trip back in 2008: Waves, Wind, and Pros And an article for your viewing pleasure: Pleasure and a Little Pain.

Getting there: International flight to Papeete, Tahiti (PPT) on Air Tahiti Nui, then domestic on Air Tahiti to Fakarava Atoll, and return from Arutua (if you can force yourself to leave!).
