This adventure begins in the lovely port of Horta on the island of Faial, where many boats spend an entire season. From there we head downwind west to Pico, which is dominated by a 2351 meter volcanic peak which for many leaves a very enduring impression. Lava beds known as 'misterios' lend to excellent walks filled with caverns wanting for exploration. The scenery on the island is varied and rich and land jaunts are a must.
From Pico we carry on to Terceira, and island rounded with quality surf breaks and more stunning vistas for incredible land based exploration. High cliffs and rocky bays comprise much of the coastline which lend to strikingly beautiful anchorages. Quality fishing, awesome surf, and whale watching should also provide for more great adventure.
This adventure is a cruising delight, with a serious emphasis on surf. Good sailing, killer waves, fantastic ports, great scenery. A fine adventure indeed.
| Summary:
+ Good sailing + Great start & end ports + Cool land excursions + Whales and dolphins + Big, powerful surf - Cool weather - Chance of lows - Inconsistent winds - Scary surf |
